Do Well: Mama Hope
Mama Hope works in close partnership with local African organizations to connect them with the resources required to transform their own communities. This innovative organization manages its projects for and by partner communities themselves to ensure sustainability. Thus far the organization has been extremely successful with the creation of schools, health clinics, children’s centers, clean water systems and food security projects.
Mama Hope challenges the conventional approach to development. They created the ‘Connected Development Model’ which is a consultative, bottom-up approach composed of three key phases: Listen, Connect and Enable.

Happy Valentines Day!
Happy Valentines Day to everyone around the world from my breakfast table this morning.
Got up early to set a ‘festive table’ and make some yummy gluten free heart-shaped pancakes! But don’t be too impressed, I didn’t have time to make them from scratch… really who does?! Plus I find packaged gluten-free pancake mix is easier and yummier. I used this mix: Bob’s Red Mill Pancake Mix
I hope everyone enjoys the day for the silly holiday it is, as just a day to celebrate love in general. Love to friends, family, significant others, and to ourselves.
On this day that we celebrate outward love take some time to give some love to your body with healthy food, some fresh air, and time to reflect about where you direct your love throughout your life.
To show my stomach some love this morning (and to balanced out the high chocolate chip content in those pancakes and chocolate covered strawberries) I made my favourite ‘Glorious Green Smoothie’!
My recipe just got posted on the Gorgeously Green website, where I am now a contributing writer. You can check it out here: Sara’s Gloriously Green Smoothie
Spread the love… Stay Well, Be Well, Do Well.
Stay Well: Mangoes
Mangoes are known for their creamy texture and tropical taste, but did you know they provide a plethora of health benefits?! These tropical treats are a great way to sweeten your morning smoothie or to slice on top of some organic low-fat cottage cheese (a protein packed snack).
Here are some of the amazing benefits mangoes provide:
Improve Digestion
- Mangoes contain enzymes that help to relieve digestive problems such as indigestion. These enzymes include Esters, Terpenes and Aldehydes (many of which are also present in papaya). Eating a little mango before a meal can assist your body in breaking down fats. Try slicing some mango on lean turkey burgers in the summer to help breakdown richer food.
Lower Cholesterol
- Those little string fibers seen in mango are actually a great source of soluble dietary fiber while the ‘meat’ of the fruit contains Pectin and Vitamin C. This perfect pairing helps to lower serum cholesterol levels and especially helps to decrease Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol (the yucky cholesterol)
Better Sex
- Besides being eaten during sexy tropical vacations (an obvious aid for better sex) mangoes also contain high levels of Vitamin E, and important vitamin for regulating the sex hormones that boost sex drive.
Glowing Skin
- The same enzymes in mango that help with digestion also can help to keep skin clear from the outside! Mango helps in clearing clogged pores with the enzymes that can breakdown some of the oils on your face. Try an at home mango mask… just smash up some mango into a find past and apply a very thin layer to the entire face. Let the mask dry and wipe of with warm face cloth.

Stay Well: Mimi Kirk the ‘Sexiest Vegetarian Over 50’
Mimi Kirk was PETA’s 2011 winner of their contest ‘Sexiest Vegetarian Over 50”. When Mimi’s family family entered her into the contest she was a little apprehensive because she was well over 50… she was 72!
This timeless beauty is full of spunk and energy and cares deeply for the environment and her family.
In an interview after winning she said… ”I’m still surprised when people ask about my longevity secrets. I think, “Why are they asking me? I’m only 72.” Because of my vegan diet, I don’t have aches or pains, and I’m energetic all day and well into the night. Really, I don’t mind getting older! I’m aiming for optimum health in the years ahead. I don’t let my age stop me from learning new things. When I hear people say, “It’s too late” or “Oh, that just happens when you get older,” I smile to myself knowing that enjoying life in our later years pain-free, happy, and full of vigor is the way we were meant to live.”
The video above is a quick peek inside Mimi Kirk’s refrigerator… Now let this be inspiration for us all, no matter what age :)

Stay Well: Herb of the Week… Rhodiola
Rhodiola is a fascinating herb that grows in cold regions of the world such as the Arctic, the mountains of Central Asia, the Rocky Mountains, and mountainous parts of Europe, such as the Alps, Scandinavia, Iceland, Great Britain and Ireland.
Rhodiola is included among a class of plant derivatives called adaptogens. These adaptogens are thought to literally help the body ‘adapt’ to new circumstances by mediating our body’s natural stress response to environmental change.
Beyond its effects as an adaptogen, Rhodiola may also be effective in improving mood and alleviating depression. This may be due its effects on serotonin & dopamine levels and while these specific neurochemical mechanisms have not been clearly documented with scientific studies, pilot studies have shown improvements in both physical and mental performance as well as the reduction of fatigue. These effects were exemplified in its use during the past centuries in Russia and Scandinavia where Rhodiola is used to cope with the cold Siberian climate and harsh winter environments.

Do Well: Trilogy Skin Care
Sisters Catherine & Sarah grew up on an Avocado orchard in Australia. Later on in their lives Catherine had been working as a beauty journalist while Sarah started a company manufacturing ingredients from plants for use in the natural supplement and cosmetic industries. The sisters began chatting about how they could combine their skills into a business that would create a simple and pure skincare line for everyday women. They then discovered a new way to extract rosehip oil that resulted in a new and exciting product for the beauty industry… And Trilogy was born.
The name Trilogy represents the three core values of the brand: Simple, Pure, Vital. These words are what inspired Catherine and Sarah while they created the line, and are what they believe differentiate Trilogy from other skincare lines.
Simple: Simplicity is integral to Trilogy’s philosophy as the sisters strive to make fuss-free products with clear information so that women can decide what works best for their needs.
Pure: Trilogy’s products use only pure natural ingredients, and the company is committed to cultural, ethical, and environmental sustainability. Catherine and Sarah work only with ethical sourcing and use environmentally friendly packaging. Trilogy works to minimize the waste created within their offices, and are 100% against animal testing. The company mantra and mission is to… “Maximum effect on your skin, minimum effect on our environment”.
Vital: While developing their original products Catherine and Sarah interviewed their friends and family and realized that women wanted to make healthier choices for themselves and their families. They found that most women they talked to would prefer to use natural skincare if it was as good as, or better than the synthetic products they were currently using. So the sisters made a strong commitment to efficacy, and promised to create natural products that would also deliver results.
This February marks 10 years since Trilogy launched their first products in 2002. To celebrate this milestone, the company has launched a limited edition ‘Helping Hand Wash’. All profits from the sale of Helping Hand Wash will be donated to Child’s i Foundation, a small charity making a big difference for the children of Uganda.
Child’s i Foundation runs projects to care for abandoned babies and vulnerable mothers, and has played an integral role in placing Uganda’s children in loving homes.

Be Well: Live in the moment…
